The Shadows starts out with a prologue foreshadowing a police encounter with a parent and child. It flashes forward to present day where detective Amanda Beck is haunted by a familiar nightmare. We learn that he father has died and her mother, who she hasn't seen in twenty-five years, is in hospice care suffering from dementia.
