I really enjoyed Alex North's last book, "The Whisper Man," but in comparison, "The Shadows" really blows its predecessor out of the water. The story here is not at all predictable, even for fans of the genre. I kept thinking I knew what the twists were -- and once or twice I was right -- but I just did not see the ending coming. The story itself was spooky in all of the best ways, but the plot had a real slow burn to it that made it incredibly readable and entertaining. I couldn't put this down and didn't want it to end.

If I had to offer a critique here, it would be that most of the women characters in the story didn't feel fleshed out in a substantial way. I wanted to know more about all of them and I felt like the North just scratched the surface on exploring them and their roles within the story as it unfolded.
