A head ups, I had not realized two things about this novel: 1., this is a sequel to The Blacksmith Queen, and 2., part of a larger world created by the author. That being said I didn't feel like I missed too much to under stand the story.

Brother Gemma Smythe dedicated her life to the glory of battle as a War Monk. She worshiped the war gods, rained destruction on her enemies, and harnessed the power to raise the dead. Against her wishes, Gemma brakes faith to fight by her sister Keeley the Blacksmith Queen's side. But the war has moved past two squabbling sisters, instead another player has started killing religious orders an stealing their scarification. Gemma must put away her hate for her other sister Beatrix in order gather the grand masters, dispel their grudge against her, and persuade them to fight for Keeley and vengeance for their fallen brothers.

This second book in The Scarred Earth Saga follows Gemma and, to a lesser degree, Keeley as the mystery deepens. Having the duel perspective of the sisters is helpful as they are separated by great distances at times. I did not, however, enjoy the other mini views. A few paragraphs about lesser characters that really don't add often and are confusing because there are so many characters to keep track of.

I did enjoy the story and loved how women-centric it was. I also loved to seeing Warriors, Blacksmiths, Virgins, Nuns, etc come together to defeat evil. It's a story that gives the reader as well some good laughs as well. The serious tone is broken in such the right place to give relief as you chuckle.

After finishing this, I went to the reading section of my Amazon Prime and started reading The Blacksmith Queen. I look forward to seeing how the second book's bigger arcs began and learn more about the characters, especially Keeley.
