Could have Been Better
First of all, there were some things I liked about this book. The protagonist is a strong, powerful woman!
However, I just couldn’t get past the language and the dialogue. I’m not a language snob, but I find it incredibly jarring when I’m reading fantasy to have the f-word used several times on every page. It makes sense in a story about modern soldiers, but in a fantasy world—I just feel like they would have different expletives. Is that too much to ask?
I also found the dialogue uncomfortably unrealistic. Realistic dialogue in a fantasy novel is essential as it helps the reader to suspend disbelief and really be drawn into the world. I would not do that with this novel.
The storyline had so much potential and the characters were great under their clunky dialogue, but I won’t be reading another book in this series, and I won’t be recommending this one to my friends.
