I love fantasy fiction featuring women warriors that hold their own beside their male counterparts. It does get a b bit tricky when the central female figure has the smug, cockiness generally associated with male characters. Gemma is definitely not going to be every reader's cup of tea. She's brash, arrogant, and a great fighter. But with those qualities that are popular in heroes it comes off as abrasive in her. I tend to like unlikable heroines though so I'm curious to see how her adventure plays out.
