Given the cover and the title of the book, I thought this fantasy was going to be very cute, tame, girly, and full of wonderful magical adventures. But to my surprise, it wasn't! Gemma the main character is stubborn, loud-spoken, violent, and possibly an alcoholic. The story has swearing, rough banter, and lots of tough love. I was not expecting any of that so the first impression really surprised me.
The story is written in a way that's easy to understand and despite the huge cast, it was easy to follow. I would like a clarification as to why everyone is referred to as Brother or Sister even if they aren't related. It makes it confusing when Gemma is talking about her real sisters and not the other people she decided to call sister. I was also surprised when the story had characters that weren't human. I guess it's been a while since I've read a story that wasn't a full human cast so this story was refreshing.
