From the excerpt I did not bond with Gemma, the main character. There are also a lot of different groups involved in this story, so I am wondering if their roles will become more clear as one gets further into the book. I can see Lord of the Rings fans enjoying this book with the various warring factions needing to come together, but so far Gemma is hard to get on board with.
