About two years after the first book, this story follows war monk Gemma and the continuing battle between her sisters for the kingdom's throne. The mystery and dread associated with war monks was definitely one of the most exciting things about their adventures, so it's nice to see more of Gemma. However, the writing still has the same quirks as before - heavy dialogue without setting, constant sibling squabbling - which grew tiresome by the end of the excerpt.
