I like to pick up a fantasy book from time to time, but I do not think this is the one for me. Gemma’s character seems harsh and rough, I found very little to endear me to her in the first few chapters. The language and writing style feel too contemporary and do not seem to align with the “period” feel that fantasy books so often have. If I saw this book cover on a bookshop display, I probably wouldn’t pick it up. That being said, for someone who really enjoys epic battles and getting caught up on other worlds – this may be the book for them!
