The Patient begins in Connecticut in the early 2000s, and follows an ambitious new doctor, Parker, as he starts work at a mental health hospital. We are introduced to Joe, an enigmatic patient from whom Parker is warned to stay away. Parker does not accept this, and begins to take on the work of researching Joe's history at the institution.

The premise of the book is solid and I was interested from the outset in what might happen at this hospital. The scene is well set, and descriptions of the landscape and hospital facilities are vivid.

Where this fell a little short for me is the writing style. It was a bit...much. Like the author used a thesaurus to write it rather than writing straightforwardly in the way that most people in the early 2000s (and today) would. Otherwise, I felt that this was a strong start, and I would read the remainder of the book.
