I received an ARC of “The Patient” by Jasper Dewitt from bookish first, in exchange for a honest review.

This is a very short read, the book was definitely freaky, and kept my attention. The ending honestly scared me, but the book lacks depth. There isn’t any real character building, I never felt “pulled in” to the story. It’s hard to invest in a horror story, when there is no connection to them. In general, I found most of the characters in this book unlikable and I didn’t really care what happened to them. The book feels incomplete and reads more like a novella. Overall, it’s an okay read. As a parent, I found the ending of this story incredibly terrifying. Most “scary reads” don’t actually frighten me, but this book definitely freaked me out.
