This book is a short, horror story that can easily be read in one sitting. I was immediately sucked in and didn’t stop reading until I was finished. This novella deals with Parker, a doctor at an underfunded mental asylum, and his patient Joe, who is considered an outcast that no doctor wants to deal with. The book is written as a series of forum posts by Parker on a “Why I Almost Quit Medicine” forum. Personally, I loved the forum format because it allowed the facts of the story to be succinct and kept the reader engrossed in the story. This novella verges more on the horror side than thriller side. There are some supernatural elements. I am a huge horror fan, especially supernatural horror, so this book was right up my alley. I really thought that at one point I had the book figured out, but then it veered off in another direction. DeWitt’s writing was enjoyable and really helped me to visualize things. I think that this book would make a great movie and is a great read for any horror fans! This was fresh, creepy read to the horror genre. I hope to read more from DeWitt in the future. Thank you, BookishFirst and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for the advanced readers copy!
