I'm still on the fence about this book after reading the excerpt.

My first issue is with the writing style. The story already feels pretty boring because it's told almost in the way of a grown man writing in a diary with excessive use of large words. Also, the story already contradicts itself within the first few pages. The protagonist claims he wants to help a failing aspect of the medical system but has already revealed he only ended up interviewing at this hospital because he refused to move away from his girlfriend. He doesn't actually care about the despair these people are in.

Next, the story is absolutely generic. The setting is in mental institution that looks run down on the outside, is impeccable on the inside, and run by a tight bun wearing nurse who only lets her hair down in the cafeteria when she's having a coffee break (because obviously nurses get so much down time in the cafeteria). We've seen this set up before!! Give me something original.

Lastly, I am so turned off by the author's choices in describing mental illness. Just because you're seeking care in a facility doesn't mean every. single. patient is delirious. The truth is, most patients seem relatively normal from the outside. I think the author had a chance to be inclusive if they had just done some thorough research and really learned out mental illness displays itself.

All of these issues completely diluted the set up of the plot for me, so I'm not even sure I would continue to read this book to find out what's in store.
