What an emotional stirring book! I started this book thinking is was going to be an easy and straightforward. I was wrong. I immediately fell in love with Pia and her struggles of living during those horrible times. I had a lot of sympathy for her situation and was glad how it ended. I was appalled with Bernice, whom which I called the racist Karen. I never wanted to punch a fictional character so bad! My family can hear witness to my rants about this woman. At least in the end, she got her just deserts. This was truly an amazing, emotional book I have read this year on a topic which I don't know much about. I loved the dual points of view and the writing style was beautifully written.
