My First Impression is about the world of Pia, a 13 year old German immigrant during the 1918 pandemic is heart-wrenching and moving. The story is about Pia and her life while the pandemic sweeps through Philadelphia when she looses her mother to the flu, her father is away fighting in the war, so she is left to take care of her infant twin brothers. The author writes about the suggestions made in the papers at the time of the Spanish Flu, of wearing onions around their necks to taking sugar cubes soaked in kerosene, to covering your cough, wearing masks, staying home to ward off the Spanish Flu, which some of those suggestions are exactly what we are living now with Covid 19. The story continues to show a diffident point of view from Bernice, a neighbor , a new mother, who just lost her new born from the flu and her husband in the war who wants to die because God has taken everyone she loves from her and wonders why she is still alive. I am looking forward to finishing this story as it is quite enthralling to me and would love to read to the end.
