This book is a heart wrenching story about a 13-year-old German immigrant's life during the 1918 Spanish Flu in Philadelphia. Pia Lange's father has enlisted and is overseas fighting in WWI to show his dedication to America. He leaves his wife, Pia and her twin brothers in a very poor neighborhood. The flu hits Philadelphia hard. Her mother gets sick and their food runs out. Pia must venture out to find food to feed her brothers. Bernice, a neighbor from across the street sees Pia leave alone. Bernice has lost her husband in the war and her infant son has died from the flu. She knows that Pia has twin baby brothers and wonders why Pia is going out alone. She goes to check on Pia's family and makes a life-altering decision that will change many lives. When Pia returns home, she finds her brothers gone. Even though Pia has lost everyone she cares about, she never gives up hope of finding them again. The odds are against her almost every step of the way, but she is determined to find the truth. Pia finds out that there are good people in the world that truly care about others. Ellen Marie Wiseman has done an amazing job writing this story. The depth of the characters and the story line make you feel like you are there. Your heart breaks with Pia's. This story shows that even though you are going through a horrible time in your life, you should never lose hope.
