The Orphan Collector no doubt makes us feel uneasy due to the current pandemic. The book occurs during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. The immense spread of the flu left children abandoned or orphaned due to the disease. The main character is Pia Lange, 13 years old. She has younger twin brothers who are 3 months old and they become separated from her during a series of horrible events. The orphanages are run by insensitive employees and the orphans’ point of view is explored within the text. The way Ellen Marie Wiseman describes the events that unfold really draws you in and makes you believe that you are inside the book. This made me feel heartbroken and sad for Pia and her family. She is a fighter against many villains in this novel. Pia’s fight to find her brothers is heart-wrenching but I could not put this book down.
