The Orphan Collector was not what I presumed the book to be at all. Wiseman knows how to write and captivate her audience. I instantly fell in love with the young German immigrant girl, Pia, living in Pennsylvania during the 1918 Spanish flu. She will do anything to keep her family together, especially when her twin brothers can only rely on her. She faces many challenges at the age of thirteen, one being the search of her missing brothers. Her courage and hope keep her strong as she struggles through her journey in finding the truth. We also have Bernice Groves, who after facing the loss of husband and son, bitterly blames her Immigrant neighbors for everything. Her self-righteous attitude leads her on a terrible journey, wrecking the lives of immigrant families along her way.
This story was incredibly difficult to put down as I take the paths of young Pia and bitter Bernice as they struggle to survive the flu epidemic. I loved the characters and the setting. The story was honest, albeit brutal, uncovering the fear and hardships families faced during the flu. I as enamored with the twists and turns never, leading to true surprises. I really didn't know what to expect as I turned each page. I would most certainly read more books my Ellen Marie Wiseman!
