Thank you to Kensington Books for an ARC of The Orphan Collector. The book takes us to Philadelphia in 1918, as the Spanish Flu pandemic grips the world. With her immigrant father off at war and her mother suddenly dead from the flu, 13 year old Pia is left to care for her infant twin brothers. One day she makes the difficult decision to leave them alone to search for food. Beatrice, a young war widow, loses her only child to the flu. Fueled by her grief and anger towards immigrants, when she sees Pia leave from her window across the street, she enters the apartment and takes the boys. The days and years that follow are full of heartache and desperation to survive. The author convincingly shows us those struggles, and the courage of Pia, determined to be reunited with her brothers. I highly recommend this book - it also serves as a reminder as we go through the current pandemic together that we should care for and help others when we can.
