Philadelphia, 1918. 13 year old immigrant Pia’s life is turned upside down; her father has joined the army and is overseas in the was, her mother dies of the flu, and she has infant twin brothers to care for. All around her, neighbors are dying. A neighbor, Bernice, has lost her husband to the war, and now her infant son has been taken by the flu.
Pia is trying desperately to find her twin brothers, but finds herself first in hospital, recovering from flu, and then trapped in an orphanage. Bernice is scamming people who have lost children to the flu, taking babies from orphanages to “replace” them, for a price.
As their paths cross, Pia eventually finds out what happened to the twins.
