From the very beginning of this book, the tension starts to build. We, as readers, know that the Spanish influenza is going to hit so we feel Pia's anxiety when she is at the parade with large crowds of people. Everything starts to go downhill rapidly and she finds herself in charge of her twin baby brothers when her mother dies from the illness. I read each chapter with growing anxiety and uneasiness.
