I first added this book to my "to read" list because part of this story reminded my of my mother. She moved to the United States from Germany when she was four, as did Pia Lange, but my mother moved during WWII. My mother was subjected to anti-German bullying, too, so I was instantly taken by Pia and her desire to be alone. Her loneliness was heartbreaking, and I felt relieved that she found a good friend in Finn Duffy. I need to know how Pia and her twin brothers got through her mother's death and if Bernice helped her or not. Now with our current pandemic happening, the rapid spread of the deadly Spanish Influenza really hits home.

I love the cover design -- it seems so fitting for the title of the book.
