As the world is in the grips of another pandemic, this book seems especially heartbreaking yet relevant. Six months ago, I would have had difficulty identifying with most of the events in this story. Today, however, is a different story. With schools and non-essential businesses closing, I found myself relating to so much more of the story.

This excerpt made me think of what the Spanish Flu pandemic must have been like - isolating in houses, but with less contact with the outside world, and even less resources to help people in need. In the Internet age, we aren't as isolated, receiving news from around the world in seconds, and have the advantage of using the internet to obtain supplies.

Although there's still a part of me that wonders if this excerpt describes where we're heading - shortages of supplies and medical care bringing out the worst in people.

I'm intrigued by the characters, and want to find out more about them and what happens to them. The writing was done very well, and was concise, laying out the brutal reality of the times in a way that doesn't feel dated or overdone. I can almost feel the despair radiating off the girl in the photo.
