Heartbreaking and painfully relevant
I've been looking forward to this book for some time and obviously now that we are in the middle of a pandemic, it's both relatable and troubling to read about one. I can't imagine a pandemic worse than the one we have now, and yet that's what the Spanish flu was, and during a war nonetheless. Reading about Pia and her family, you certainly feel their fear. The overwhelming loss is something I cannot relate to and I hope I never do. I appreciate the historical accuracy and level of detail in this book. The photos at the beginning are a stark reminder that yes, this did happen and real lives were lost. I also like the idea that Pia has a sixth sense about death. That's a new twist that you don't usually see in historical fiction and it makes her character all the more compelling. Great read so far and I can't wait to finish reading it.
