Ellen Marie Wiseman's previous books were first rate, and this one looks to continue that legacy. It's especially timely in this year of Coronavirus, and also appeals to me because Pia, the main character in the excerpt I read could have been my mother, or one of my aunts, all born to their German mother in Philadelphia in the early years of the twentieth century.

Wiseman sets the stage well, with a bustling city scene that contrasts sharply with the more rural area (Hazelton, PA) where Pia had been born. Her intense shyness is described vividly, and her fear of the city crowd is palpable. The reader can easily imagine the emotions that will follow as the city, and Pia's family, are engulfed by the terrible flu virus.

I'll look forward to reading this newest offering from Wiseman as soon as it's available!
