A Shocking and Timely Look at Life During the Spanish Flu Outbreak

Pia Lange is a young teen whose family has moved to Philadelphia in search of a better life. What they have found instead is prejudice against her German family and heartbreak when the Spanish flu arrives. Pia is left to care for her twin baby brothers. Meanwhile, in her neighborhood, a young widow named Bernice sees Pia walking hunched over. Bernice resents Pia and her family because her dad lost his job because Mr. Lange had taken it. This seems to be a fascinating start to an historical fiction that is well researched. I look forward to reading the rest of Pia and Bernice’s story.
