This book was not what I expected it to be, but it fascinated me all the same. It felt like watching a horror movie, but not a slasher it was a thought provoking, world shattering kind of horror. I expected something more traditional, but I don’t know why I did. I knew this was Native American fiction and I should have known it would be unique to anything I’ve read before as that’s not a genre I’ve had the pleasure of reading before.

There was some magical surrealism mixed in with the horror and it took some time for the back story to fully emerge. Four friends went hunting 10 years ago just before Thanksgiving and despite knowing it wasn’t right they shot and killed a herd of elk. This was a decision that would come back to haunt them in the most unpredictable ways.

This was the kind of book I would have to pause and digest every few chapters but I could never wait long before diving back in. I haven’t read anything by this author before but I hope to be able to read more in the future.
