Wow! This book blew me away. I listened on audio and this was definitely the way to go - the narrator did an amazing job and had distinct voices for all the characters.
I went into this book with one expectation - horror set on an Indian reservation - and left with so much more. This book has some graphic and unexpected violence but the author really has a way of ramping up the anticipation and anxiety in a situation. There were several moments where I wanted to stop listening, only because I felt more dread than I could stand.
Awesome horror aside, I loved getting more insight onto life on a reservation - the families, sense of community and culture, hunting and respect for the kill, racism, discrimination in the school system, inadequate healthcare, uneasy relationship with police, the dogs, BASKETBALL! All of these things were delicately interwoven into the fabric of this story.
I will definitely get a physical copy and explore more books from this author.
