It is terrifying to imagine that something you did many years ago could be waiting in the shadows to strike when the timing is right. The original publication date moved once or twice until it seemed to settle on a July release. Since it is June already, though 2020 has mostly felt like I am living in a terrible horror story, it was the right time to dive into The Only Good Indians.
Four young friends, Native Americans, make on a life-changing and very bad decision. They decide to hunt on land reserved for tribal elders. This immediately causes repercussions for all of them with their tribe, but it is nothing compared to what waits for them in the future. The elk they hunted and killed isn't at all forgiving, especially since she was pregnant.
Some mistakes can never be forgotten or forgiven, and what they did will follow them wherever they go with a vengeance. At times, I found the writing difficult, though I think this may have been related to when I read this book. What should have been an inside read while I was curled up on the couch, late into the night, turned into an outside read. I don't usually choose books that aren't just engaging page flippers when I am reading in the summer sun, but this one required a bit more attention.
Hard to classify this one, but one worth reading. I won't say more for fear of entering spoiler territory, but there is blood, and there is gore, so be prepared. My first Stephen Graham Jones book but not my last.
