This is a good story if you are able to look past the “monster” element and see the monster as a broad metaphor in which a lot of culture and - in the case of the incident that catalyzes the events - role reversal is evaluated.

I do not really understand what makes a book fit in to the horror genre. It is not as easy with movies to define and it is really a known device here to tell a bigger story and creates a stage. It is definitely not a scary book. Any extended digressions that attempted fear was kind of bland.

Once you get past the monster/ghost trope, it is well plotted with interesting characters. The description of reservation life, and the novel’s evaluation of identity and history was above average for me. This would be a good choice for a book club or buddy read because there are a lot of different themes to discuss amongst a group.

I would definitely recommend this book to others.
