This book has a great first page that immediately draws you in! Within two paragraphs, we learn so much information about Lauren, our main character--she's a liar, she's close enough with her mom that she knows her favorite beverage and is willing to bring it to her at work, and she has a secret agenda involving a nursing home. My mind immediately went to drugs, and I was immediately wrong! The author wastes no time diving into the action, pulling off the delicate feat of sharing information without a large info dump. By the end of this First Look, we know Lauren was involved in a dangerous fire, possibly one that left someone dead; that she has been struggling with alcohol and with PTSD; that she's lonely but trying to pretend that she doesn't need anyone. It's a thrilling opening and one can only hope the rest of the novel will live up to the beginning!
