I have heard marvelous things about Wilbur Smith’s other books, but haven’t read any of his work myself yet (unless you could the first look here). Based solely on the first 20 or so pages of The New Kingdom, he makes ancient history feel almost like yesterday. I was worried the language and unfamiliar names would make the story difficult to follow, but he seems to have found a good balance.
