I clicked on the excerpt of this book with apprehension because I don't normally enjoy fantasy books. But boy was I surprised...

'The Kinder Poison' initially seemed like an overdone version of every other fantasy book alive but once I started reading, I quickly began to get immersed in the story! In my opinion, the beginning dragged for a little bit and I was close to losing interest, but thankfully, it picked up again towards the boat scene.

From what I read, I can tell the book's heavy with description which WAS pretty at times but sometimes had me getting lost in all the imagery. But I suppose that's just my personal preference of reading books with less description.

Despite the fact that this idea has obviously been done in many novels in similar ways, I found the concept really refreshing. I liked that the main character could speak to animals (SO COOL) and I liked that she wasn't 'powerful' from the get-go. (I've read too many stories where the protagonist is already super strong and assertive from the beginning which does tend to annoy me because UM CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?!)

This also gave me MAJOR 'Red Queen' vibes which is amazing because I ADORED that series. I can already see the similarities with the whole survival thing and the imminent love triangle with princes!!!

Anyway, this first impression of 'The Kinder Poison' had me smiling at just how good it was and I honestly reckon I would continue reading it. I just hope the author Natalie Mae adopts her own style and that this book doesn't end up being too reminiscent of the 'Red Queen' series!
