I waited a long time for The Invocations, sometimes impatiently as the release date kept being pushed farther and farther out. Young adult is my bread and butter, and the blurb for this book definitely caught me, hook, line and sinker. I absolutely adored House of Hollow, and mostly enjoyed A Semi Definitive List of Worst Nightmares. Sadly, The Invocations did not meet my high expectations. The beginning was rather confusing, especially with the alternating point of views, and it was difficult to tell the characters apart. It was impossible to figure out the point of the story or get a feel for where it was going. It took quite a few chapters for the pace to reach an acceptable speed. I often found myself putting the book down, disinterested, and close to DNF. It took me weeks to finish it, I really slothed through it. I like Sutherland's writing style but the story just did not mesh well. It seems she may have tried TOO hard with this one. Thank you to Bookish First for offering this title in their catalogue.
