The protagonist, Emily, is a 12 year old girl who becomes a runaway after escaping some men who brutally killed and raped her mother and young sister and started the house on fire.
The story then centers around her trying to avoid the killers and the FBI who are looking for her. She escapes them and becomes very adept at the ways of the streets. She knows if they catch her they will put her in a foster home. She comes upon an ex-murderer, Lucas, who teaches her how to defend herself. She also starts working out with Lucas' girlfriend, Kiona.
I enjoyed the fast-paced reading of the book and found that I couldn't put it down. I read it while making dinner and I lost a lot of sleep wanting to find out how it ended. Although I am not a fan of series, I do look forward to reading the second book in this series.
