Reader’s Notes:

– this told from Spencer’s point of view as well as with transcripts of different social media outlets (mainly from a podcast)

– Spencer has PTSD & night terrors from the accident

– there are about 19 curse words

– a high school student dies in the crash

– blood from multiple injuries are mentioned

– there are mentions of teenage drug & alcohol use; Spencer specifically ends up taking more & more Vicodin as the story progresses (which she received to aid in her recovery from her injuries; by the end she gets medical help to ween her off it)

– there are no (during the ‘current’ events) kisses on page, however a kiss between side characters that had happened in the past was very briefly described to have tongue & it was mentioned that one of the characters put their hand down the other’s pants

– a character is attacked and threatened with a gun (no shots are fired)

– one of the main side characters is nonbinary

Review:

I removed a star as I am not comfortable with reading books with majority of the points mentioned above. The mystery also grew a little mundane for me towards the middle of the story (I’m not sure if I was missing some of the clues being hinted at or if it just was supposed to lull a bit by focusing on a new possible romance for Spencer).

However, the mystery aspect picked up towards the end with more and more reveals/connections to past clues. A few of these reveals I guessed at and then doubted my assumption as Spencer’s assumptions changed/steered towards something else. I loved seeing the clues come together and make sense as more things came to light or were thought of as a motive. I also really liked that when I realized that Olivia (Spencer’s best friend) hadn’t been around in the story for a bit, that the author addressed it and brought her back into the fold rather than just letting her fade away as the story shifted towards what really happened the night of the accident. I also really liked that Spencer knew her memories were so jumbled, but that the memories she thought of made me think a few different things as the story progressed.

Summary:

Four students get into a car when leaving the last party of the summer. But when the car is crashed, one of the student’s doesn’t make it. The question is, who is at fault?

Spencer was in the crash and sustained multiple injuries, including the loss of majority of her memories of the night. All she knows is that she broke up with her boyfriend, who was also in the car for some reason, and that she had been in a crash. Though when her ex is painted as the one at fault by people in authority and those in charge of a podcast, Spencer feels that something is wrong with their assumption. But with her limited memories, she can’t find an answer why.

So Spencer takes matters into her own hands and begins investigating the events leading up to the crash and getting into the car with her ex’s best friend. The more she thinks about it, the more questions Spencer has about the whole situation. Who would have wanted Chris, the most well liked kid in school, dead? Why did Spencer get into a car with her ex after having broken up with him? And why were Tabby, a loner new kid, and Chris in the car with them?
