When Marie Lu reposted about Melissa de la Cruz's "The Headmaster's List" on her Instagram, I immediately went to add the upcoming novel to my Goodreads TBR. Any mystery/thriller is an easy way to get into the world of a novel. I've never read anything by Melissa de la Cruz before, but I hope that "The Headmaster's List" will be the best introduction to her work. I especially want to read her novels because she's Filipina. I've always believed that representation in media needs to begin with the behind-the-scenes work, not merely in the characters and plot. Authors such as Melissa de la Cruz prove that Filipino people have the power to be in the publishing industry. The book's premise is very similar to other novels in the YA mystery/thriller genre. Often, I find books with this type of plot recycled, but I expect Melisa de la Cruz to put a new twist on the genre.
