This was an interesting book and quite a wild ride. There was a lot going on and it was a bit out of focus for me. I think one reason for this was that this was a second in the series and I had not read the first. Another is definitely the French judicial system. The cover art was amazing and it definitely made me pick it up off my to-be-read shelf.
I wish the the main character, Mazarelle, was a little more engaging and less dry but it made sense in the tonality of the book. The mystery was there with twists and turns and a good amount of different characters in the mix. I would definitely read another book from this author.
This book should probably come with a few trigger warnings as there were quite a few areas that were difficult to read through and may affect readers quite a bit. I didn't need the engagement the detective had with some characters he meets, but overall I wasn't too put off from not finishing it!
