I think this is part of a series about detective Mazarelle, but it can definitely be read on its own. The prologue immediately sets the scene for time period, geo-political tensions, and the mystery Mazarelle will have to solve. After three very short chapters, I'm already intrigued by a whole list of small details and puzzles.
