This book pulled me in right from the start! A teenage girl known as Alice Black running from her past finds herself arrested where we learn she's actually Emily Calby who's family was murdered three years previously. She seems like she will be the type of character with a bad attitude but we find out quickly when she's in a detention center she actually helps others girls who seem to be worse off than her. Lots of corruption going on in the detention center and outside the courtroom. While working in the library she finds a little law library and starts studying for her own case. Which was good as her own lawyer ends up in the ER and she defends her own case!
This is the first book I've read by Dorian Box and it was great! Knowing this was the 2nd Emily Calby book and not having read the first one the story line gave me enough details about her past I didn't feel like I needed to go back and read the first book. Can be read as a stand alone book for sure.
