I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this story, as it took me a little while to get into it. But once it grabbed my attention it never really let go!

Emily Calby has had a difficult life, at least in recent years. That much is obvious, even if you (like me) didn’t read the first book in the series. Luckily, the author catches you up quickly, and references past happenings with enough information to keep you feeling like you know what’s going on. We catch up with Emily on her 16th birthday, as she immediately gets into trouble for carrying a gun and threatening a biker with it. She’s been living under a false identity, but fingerprints identify her for who she truly is—and incriminate her as a murder suspect. We then follow Emily through her time at a juvenile prison, as she makes some friends, and through her trial, as she also learns more about the law and faces a tough prosecutor. There’s a relatively happy (though a bit bittersweet, I thought, due to Emily’s exploits in the chapters after her trial) ending, that’s left relatively open to future sequels!
