I had high hopes for this book based on the summary and preview. I knew it was second in the series, but I'd seen others post that it could be read as as standalone novel. I'm not sure that I agree.

I struggled a bit to get into this book and connect with the characters. Some backstory is provided, so that helped a bit.

I did enjoy the fact that Emily is a determined character. Her character, as well as the secondary characters, was well-developed. I think by reading them in order, the reader would have a greater appreciation for Emily's growth.

The writing is solid, and things are nicely detailed so the reader can easily visualize things. Many scenes take place in a courtroom or juvenile detention center. It reminded me a bit of "Orange is the New Black" in that aspect.

I did enjoy the book more as it went along, but I would recommend reading the series in order.
