I wasn't sure about the story before going in but as soon as I was reading I was absorbed into the story. Dorian Box knows how to write in an engaging, and suspenseful way that keeps you flying through the pages, eager to learn more! I haven't read the first book but I understood the story well enough, but figure that certain characters come up from the first book. It seems like a fun read!
