3⭐️ For fans of sci fi, black mirror, DARK MATTER, and Westworld. This one has such an interesting and unique premise, and when I heard about it, I knew I would want to read it!
PLOT: Evelyn Caldwell has award winning research for creating clones. However, when her husband leaves her for Martine, her clone, she isn’t happy. Then, Evelyn gets a desperate call from Martine that their husband is dead and she needs her help.
While this one wasn’t as much of a page turner as I was hoping, I enjoyed the sci-fi aspects of the story. As I was reading, it became very clear that the cloning is unethical. However, the scientists see these clones as bodies to create organs for others or do research on. As Evelyn becomes closer to Martine, she is conflicted about viewing her as a human or a research specimen. So, it’s one of those books where you can’t think too much into it, you just have to accept that clones are possible and that it is acceptable.
There were “thriller” moments at the beginning and end, but the middle was more about Evelyn and Martine’s relationship. Is it possible that they are friends? Or are they just protecting themselves from anyone finding out about what happened to their husband... and what they are doing to fix it. There is also a big part of the story about Evelyn’s childhood, messed up relationship with her parents, and how her relationship with her husband fell apart. These were a bit slow for me. I wish there had been a few more crazy moments mixed into the middle. Overall, I liked the book, and am interested to see what others think.
