Thank you to Macmillan Audio for an ALC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Evelyn Caldwell should be living her best life right now. Her award winning and scientific breakthrough on cloning is going to change the world. But first she needs to deal with the fact that her husband made a clone of Evelyn, and left Evelyn for the clone, Martine. After a meeting that ends in harsh words, Martine calls Evelyn in a panic after a discussion with her husband turns violent. The two are going to have to work together to cover up Nathan's death.

This book was wild and I really loved it. I haven't read anything by Sarah Gailey yet, but I'm glad this was my first one. While there are probably some things about the research that's not perfectly accurate, Evelyn's perception of dealing with funding, supplies, grants and conferences was so spot on for what I've seen in my own PhD student career.

I really loved that the scientific aspect of this was believable. While there's still a lot that we don't know about cloning specifically cloning humans, I thought the way Gailey shaped it was fascinating and realistic.

Then there was Evelyn. I loved her so much. I wish we had more women in STEM characters in general, and more like Evelyn. For her, her career is the most important thing and I think putting your career ahead of other things should be normalized, especially for women. I liked that Evelyn is a dedicated scientist and is almost always logical to the problems in her life. She still has feelings, but she deals with them differently than how women are portrayed to deal with their feelings.

I didn't know how much of this novel would be about Martine, but as soon as she and Evelyn started interacting more, I was sold. Their friendship and how they come to work around each other was so incredible. Martine was able to things that Evelyn had trouble with (like unpacking boxes) while Evelyn did more of the big decision things. I liked that they both brought something to the table. Martine is pretty naive in the first half of the book, but as Evelyn gives her the opportunity and space to grow, we see her intelligence and ability increase.

For most of the book, I kind of forgot it was a thriller/mystery? I was invested in the whole cloning a new Nathan and the growing friendship between Evelyn and Martine. However, the thriller aspect definitely comes back in the end with a vengeance. I thought I knew what the title meant, but then we got to the end and I was like shitttttt.

The ending was seriously wild, but I loved how everything got wrapped up.
