I LOVED this book.

Evelyn has spent her entire life obsessed with asking questions and researching. She finally reaches her peak goal - critical acclaim and a legacy - thanks to her research into cloning technology. In Evelyn's lab, clones can be made to take a bullet for a politician or for organ harvesting. The process is gruesome and thankless, with memories having to be implanted and "conditioning" being required - after all, if the original version walks with a limb or has a crooked nose, it's required for the clone, as well, and all of that has to be done manually. Unfortunately, Evelyn has a dark secret - her ex-husband, Nathan, has only recently left her for a clone version of her, Martine. Martine is not supposed to exist. Clones are temporary, made for a purpose and then destroyed. Martine's life has no end date, and her mere existence threatens everything Evelyn has been working so hard for.

Things get worse when Martine gets pregnant, which isn't supposed to happen. When Nathan is murdered, everyone's future is thrown into danger, and Evelyn and Martine will have to work together if they both want to survive.

I absolutely loved the story and pacing Gailey had here. The entire book was perfect, cut only into the required pieces and always leaving me wanting to read the next chapter. Even as I neared the end I was caught off-guard by the twists and turns she had in store. If you enjoy crime and mystery novels with a twist of science-fiction, this is a must-read book of 2021.
