Murder, clones, and an unsteady alliance between a reserved scientist and a creation she never knew existed. Evelyn is a leader in an advanced form of cloning that allows for the rapid creation of a mirror copy of grown adults, memories, and all. When a devastating secret comes to light, Evelyn must protect a clone that shouldn't exist, or risk the ruination of her career. While the language is often detached and clinical at times, it suites Evelyn as the narrator. Life is merely happening around her, not to her. Even though the explanations of replication and DNA sequencing can be a bit daunting, they do lend a certain gravitas to the story. While the premise roped me in, it was Gailey's writing and sharp wit that kept me enthralled until the end. The bond she forges between two women who are mirror images, yet so different, is stark, heartbreaking, and, ultimately, what each needs to make it through the day.
