The Echo Wife is a smart, unique, and enthralling domestic suspense/science fiction that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Dr. Evelyn Caldwell is a brilliant scientist specializing in human clone research. She experiences the shock of her life when she learns not only that her husband is having an affair but that he has stolen her research to create a “better” version of Evelyn herself. As she struggles to recover from her many emotional wounds, Evelyn quickly learns there are even more surprises to come. This book was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. The plot, pacing, and characterization were all remarkably executed, creating a genius blend of genres. I was completely engrossed in the story from the very first page, I connected easily with Evelyn and her flaws, and I experienced legitimate surprise as the plot twisted and turned. I loved how the author used Evelyn’s reflections to gradually connect her past to her present. Although I would consider the plot more character-driven than action-driven, it is still a tense page-turner that also forces you reflect on the ethics of scientific research and the meaning of life. My only critique is that it felt like the story was building up to something more in the final pages but there was never any kind of big payoff. Even still, I foresee this one haunting me for quite some time! Thank you to Tor and BookishFirst for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
