Mixed Feelings

I have very mixed feelings about this sneak peek-- the opening page contains descriptions of two different and contrasting dresses our protagonist wore during pivotal moments in her life. I love when fashion is used to communicate character development, and I appreciate symbolic totems that reflect a character's development and arc. However... in the three chapters I read more totems appear and our protagonist seems abnormally self-aware. I enjoy introspective characters, but overly self-aware characters feel unrealistic and pull me out of the plot. A reading pet peeve of mind is when the author doesn't trust their readers enough to pick up on symbolism and nuance, and compensate with excessive exposition. The cover reflects the shiny yet ominous tone of the opening. I'm definitely intrigued, but a little concerned that this protagonist might be so self-aware that her story will lack self-realization.
