Protagonist, John Coleman, is a husband, father, attorney, and a very haunted man. He's haunted by the memories of The Butcher, a serial killer, and the toll this murderer took on his father, an ex-police officer assigned to the Butcher case who later committed suicide due to feelings of failure at not apprehending this criminal. Coleman is forced to once again relive all of these memories when The Butcher once again begins to terrorize the community. One of the Butcher's victims is a man known to Coleman. He is contacted by the victim's daughter to finalize her father's estate and that's when things start to go awry for John. He begins to make some really, REALLY stupid and awful choices which eventually lead him straight into harm's way as well as straight to jail, having been accused of murder.

I'm so used to books that take forever to get to the climax and then, just like that, you're plummeting to the end of the book. This book was nothing like that. By the middle of the book I'd been taken through so many emotions, and just when I wondered if things would all of a sudden become blah, they surprised me. There were times where I wondered where this book was taking me and if I was going to end up completely disappointed in the end. But, I wasn't. For me, this book was more than just a story about a serial killer terrorizing a man and his community. It was also about CHOICES. The choices one makes in life and the hell that these choices can get you into if you're not careful. There were times where I felt Coleman was a giant man baby who didn't want to take responsibility for his actions because he was a weak minded moron who wanted to blame everyone else for his behavior. By the end, it was refreshing to see (and hope) that this character had seen where his poor choices had taken him and was taking the steps to repent and turn his life around. He seemed to finally be taking responsibility for his actions. The thrilling story surrounding the moral story was simply a plus. I'd definitely recommend anyone who likes this genre to give this book a whirl.
